Starting A Blog: Basic Things You Must Bear In Mind

Starting A Blog

Starting A Blog: Blogging is no doubt one of the easiest ways you can make

money online but there are few things you must bear in mind before jumping into the blogging business.

A lot of people believe that blogging is a get-rich-quick scheme and

this belief has led most people into blogging only for them to rush
out of it sooner than they expected.

Blogging will surely put an end to your financial woes only if you are
ready to put in the best of your effort.

Blogging requires a lot of
sacrifices, hard work, and time before the money start showing up.

Below are 5 things you must bear in mind before starting a blog

(NB: I will be using ‘Blog’ and ‘Site’ interchangeably in this post)

5 things you must bear in mind before starting a blog

1: Blogging Is Not A Get-Rich-Quick Scheme

I already mentioned this but still, I want it to be the very first
the thing I want you to always bear in mind.

Majority of people who took to blogging indulged in it with the belief
that in the next two or three months, the money will start coming.

A greater percentage of those who believe in this always get disappointed when after a year and they are yet to make a dime from their blog.

If you want to take up blogging as a career or just as an extra source of

income, you will soar in the right direction if you go into it with the right attitude.

Having said that, discard even the slightest thought of get-rich-quick
from your mind. It’s better not to even start at all.

The success or the amount of money you can make from your site and the amount of time it took you to do so depends on so many factors.

However, don’t expect success or money to come quickly.

Just having a blog of your own without working on it doesn’t define
blogging or make you a blogger.

As of now, there are over 600 million blogs worldwide.
What little message did you deduce from that whooping figure? It is a

crowded market and that is one of the numerous reasons why it’s hard
to make money from a blog.

The word is ‘hard’ not impossible. You just have to be consistent and work on it for the long-term.

Giving up after a short time will sum you up with 99 percent of others who never made a dime and went dormant.

Nevertheless, whether you succeed or fail to leave up to expectations

as regards your blogging journey, there is something that is almost
certain: you will not make any money at the beginning.

If you really want to succeed in the blogosphere, bear it in mind that
blogging takes time before the money starts coming in.

It is highly imperative that you bear this in mind before starting a blog.

Time alone will not guarantee you success. You can blog for years with
nothing to show for it.

So do not just start your blog, fold your hands, and expect to become the next biggest blogger in the country.

You have to put in hard work and exercise patience

2: Avoid Copy And Paste, Create Unique Contents When Starting A Blog.

Do you even know what Copy and Paste means?

This means copying posts or contents from other people’s blog and
pasting to your own blog.

Copy and paste is one of the biggest blogging mistakes you must avoid
at all costs.

Never make a copy and paste your approach to content strategy.

Do you remember back in secondary school or college when it was a
crime to copy your classmate’s homework or to share your own answers

with your best buddy and how your teacher penalized you when caught? Surprisingly, the internet works almost in the same way.

The difference here is that instead of being penalized by your teacher or your principal, Google will penalize you.

Contents you copied from other websites or blogs become duplicate contents on your blog.

When Google detects duplicate contents, it punishes your blog. Google doesn’t ignore duplicate content when it is detected.

As a result of this, your blog might not appear in search results and this can be bad news for the health of your site.

(NB: I use site and blog interchangeably in this article)

Even if you come across a particularly interesting post on another blog and genuinely want to share the same post verbatim with your audience, you will still get into Google’s bad books.

In addition to the above, these are the disadvantages and reasons why you should never indulge in copy and paste, You Can Lose Your blog.

i. Google can delete your site

Google can delete your blog as a result of the duplicate contents you
have filled it with.

ii. DMCA Can Take Down Your Blog

DMCA stands for Digital Millennium Copyright Act. This is a US law
that Protects digital copyrights, not excluding the properties of bloggers on his site.

DMCA was introduced when digital music pirating rose to its peak in the 1990s.

When you steal contents from another site, the site owner can report
your site to DMCA by filling the DMCA Takedown Notice Form.

THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Create your own unique content for your blog.
According to Bill Gates in January 1996, ‘Content is king’

Unique contents will make your site stand out from the rest and
cherished by google.

A well written unique post will continue to rank on google therefore bringing traffic to your site and increasing your sales.
More traffic, more money.

3: Avoid Free Host And Domain Services When Starting A Blog

The offer of getting a free web hosting and building your website without spending any money is very tempting.

Most newbies in the blogging industry who want to start their own site
tries to keep the cost extremely low and this is quite understandable

It is almost abnormal to think you will succeed in your blogging
career if you depend on free things for your blogging.

After signing up to these ‘free web host and domain services’ you will
begin to realize the limitations in their free packages and to your

the greatest surprise, you will discover that they are not actually what you
expected.

Don’t settle for a free domain and Host. Gone are the days when people
use free domains and host for their website.

Save some money first and go for a standard top-level domain and a
very good host. This is the first thing you must do.

Years ago, when I was still a novice, I began with a free dot Tk domain
and a free host but to my greatest surprise, I woke up one morning and
discovered that my site has disappeared.

I tried everything I did all to no avail. I was pained because I spent time working and creating content for the site.

If you want your blog to stand out, spend money on it.

I can assure you that advertisers and even your audience will conclude
that you are not serious especially if you are using a free domain.

So if you are pondering on signing up for a free host and domain
service, I advise you to stop now.

Below, I will give you reasons why you should never channel your
thoughts towards setting up a free site.

i. It will make your website slow.

The reason is simple. Those website hosting companies that offer free
services put over hundreds of websites on the same server.

Sharing the same server will make all the site load at a totally
unacceptable speed thereby driving your site users away.

ii. Your web address or URL will look unprofessional

Imagine having a web address like ‘Yoursitename. freewebsite . com

How do you see that address?

People who visit your website and even advertisers who might want to
do business with you will not take your site seriously because of your
domain.

When you must have realized that you need a professional and standard
domain name and extension (E.g Yoursitename .com or .net, .org) and

ask these companies for one, you will have to pay around $20-$30 for a
domain. Something that costs $9.

iii. Your free hosting and domain provider will advertise on your site for free

Advertisements that appear on your site should be fetching your money
but instead,

your free website providers will run irrelevant and unwarranted advertisements on your site for free.

iv. Your free website providers can shut down your site at any time

Most of the time, we do not read TERMS AND CONDITIONS because they are
very lengthy and voluminous.

Some of these companies stated clearly that they can wipe off your

site at any given time without giving you any reason or notice.
I have witnessed this personally.

v. You can’t run advertisements on the site to make money

This is enough to make you have a rethink before jumping at the free
hosting offer.

They will run advertisements on the same site and make money off your

traffic but you can’t place your own ads to make money.E.g Adsense
ads, MGID, Media. net, Propeller, to mention but a few.

4. Without Traffic, You Might Be Wasting Your Time

When Starting A Blog, Web traffic is as important as unique content in the world of blogging.

The internet has exposed us to so many arguments on which is the main
king between content and traffic.

Some stand with content while others are of the opinion that traffic
is the real king

Traffic in blogging and websites is the number or amount of data that
is received and sent by visitors to a website.

Traffic is the number of people who visit a site and the number of
pages they visit on the site.

Your site keeps a record of traffic to keep you updated with pages or parts that perform better than others, countries where your visitors are coming

from and devices with which they viewed your site. Nothing keeps a blog alive and glowing like traffic.

Having no traffic implies that nobody reads your blog posts and without readers, I wonder your very purpose in writing.

Most bloggers use their blog as a source of income by placing
advertisements.

If you happen to be one of them, a lack of traffic denotes a lack of earning.

Sometimes, without traffic ads do not display and therefore will receive no clicks.

How To Gain More Traffic To Your Blog

There are numerous ways to draw traffic to your blog but I will
discuss a few helpful ways to achieve this.

i. The Social Media Effect

Social media is one of the proven ways to pull more traffic to your blog.

Expand your reach to social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

You can share your recent post links on your Facebook
timeline, pages, groups, and tweets to get more people to visit your site.

ii. Get Traffic From Email List

Build an email list of your site visitors and they will be forever yours.

There are several ways to build an email list.
I will give you a simple trick; offer a free ebook or anything peculiar
to your niche in exchange for your visitor’s email address.

According to a popular saying, ‘The money is in the list’
Do not neglect it.

iii. Take Advantage Of Guest Posting

Guest posting is another powerful technique to pull traffic to your  blog.

Post on other blogs in your niche and attach your link at the end of the post.

If the people who read the post found it interesting, they will follow
your link to your blog to read more. This increases your traffic.

iv. Learn Search Engine Optimization

If you know SEO very well, you will not struggle for traffic.
You will enjoy the continuous flow of traffic from search engines.

The Right Thing To Do When Starting A Blog

Go for a paid hosting. There are reliable hosting companies like
Bluehost, HostGator, Hostinger, Namecheap, GoDaddy, 1and1, Etc

They are unlike the free website providers. You have control over your
the site and can do almost whatever you chose to do on it.

Finally, Don’t Start A Blog Because Others Are Blogging

This is very important. Before you publish that your new blog, ask
yourself these few questions.

“Why am I setting up this blog?”

“Do I have a passion for this?”

“Do I have something to offer?”

“Can I solve people’s problems and give them answers they have been
searching for?”

If your answers to the above questions you asked yourself are
positive, you can go ahead and hit the publish button.

Publish that blog and show the world what you have got.

See you at the top!
